    Ubuntu 9.04 question

I am looking for an application that will allow me to make an image of my Linux partitions and MBR, so I can re-install them on another HDD in case the current HDD fails.

    Thanks, John

I've not seen any programs to do that, but if you've got a blank CD, I always recommend the LiveCD Clonezilla. Mind you, I found Clonezilla about the same time I was trying out Linux for the first time, and it's been my tool of choice since.

Thanks hellnoire. I was hoping to save a drive image, rather than have to buy another HDD to clone to. I guess if I have a HDD failure, I'll just have to re-install Linux and customize it all over again.

Well, I'm sure there are other solutions too... like I said, it's one of many, and it's the solution I use.

Ghost 4 Linux has been named as one that might work, if you use Windows, then you can use Acronis' free versions it gives away to the hard disk makers, you'll just need it to make a LiveCD, then you can uninstall it. It's what I did.

Or if that doesn't work, there's always mondo and
    dd
I've not used dd or mondo, but Google should have some tutorials on how to use them.

Not a problem. Just remember, if Linux has a problem or flaw, it's the amount of choice... that you do end up having it's one of the best OSes if you like choice and customization.

I am in the process of downloading the iso for "system rescue cd", which includes Partimage. From what I've read on the Linux forums, this should let me create a system image of my Linux partition. I also downloaded Clonezilla and burned it onto a cd. Will have to see which works best.

For a technologically challenged windows user like myself, LOL, neither of them are simple to use, but I got the job done with Clonezilla, so that's the one I'd choose.

Hahah, true enough... but it does teach you a little about computers, to run something like that.
