    Ububtu 10.04

When 10.04 is released, would it be better to upgrade via 9.10, or download the OS and burn a live cd for a new installation. The reason I ask is that when I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, I did it through live update and it left the file system as Ext 3. I believe 10.04 will be using Ext 4, so I'm wondering if trying to run it on Ext 3 would make a difference.

    Thanks, John

Truth be told, there's not much at the moment EXT4 does different from EXT3... so you'd be fine running the upgrade. There's not a problem in doing that, and it won't change your file system.

So if it's faster for you, you might be better to upgrade though the net.

I guess I'd rather do the upgrade, so I don't have to start all over with installing apts, but i'm considering changing to Xubuntu, so will cross that bridge when the time comes. I didn't figure there would be much difference in the file systems, but it's nice to have it confirmed. Thanks!

Well, Xubuntu's including more GNOME libraries in 10.04, thus making it risky to remain stable and fast... you'd be better to just run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 is better option for my opinion.
First download and then install full version it takes lots of time and as hellnoire said before
There's not a problem in doing that, and it won't change your file system.
    which is a big advantage

Well, if thats the case, then maybe I'll just stick to Ubuntu. I know you prefer Xubuntu because it's lighter on resources and faster, but truth be told, I've run both on my PC and there really isn't that much of a difference. The biggest difference I noticed was when I went from Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit to 64 bit. The 64 bit version loads and shuts down faster and the apt's are the same way. Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit also runs much faster than either Win XP or 7. If I can find apt's to replace some of the programs I use on a daily basis in Windows, like finanacial software, I'd forget about Windows all together.

Oh yeah, if I were to do an install of the Xubuntu desktop, I assume it would leave all the GNOME libraries in place?

By default, yes, it would. Unless you manually uninstall them.

Xubuntu is about to get a ton heavier as they are merging parts of GNOME with XFCE in Xubuntu... so I'd not recommend it anymore.

As it is, I'm looking at Debian for a new OS

Would you mind keeping me posted about how Debian works out for you?

    Thanks, John

Certainly. I've tried it in the past when I was big into Ubuntu, didn't find much difference between it other then I had a root account and a normal user account. Oh and manual set-ups for my ATI That was in the past, and I don't think they've changed that yet. I'll let you know if they do.
