Confused Is linux good for designing software?

Hello, I new here. I just wanna ask whether linux good for running designing software. From what i read, linux is maybe the lightest OS among others, right? So I think if it possible to run resources hogging software in linux, I want to utilize that.

I know that there is gimp as image editing software, but what if I want to run photoshop?

and also any video editing/ flash making software like adobe after effect of adobe flash? or is there any good open source software?

and if there is possibility, what version do you recommend me to use?

    anyway, thanks for replying~

first you need to know that linux comes in various shapes and sizes, over 3000 of them. and definately linux is the best for you if you know how to use it
you can use wine to run most softwares which usually run in windows(like adobe photoshop).but wait for some1 else's reply as well before jumping to conclusions.
as for which distro is best for this.. i dont know

For to run Photoshop under linux you would need Wine or Crossover, but why run Photoshop when you have Gimp, Gimpshop etc...

There is a also a Paint.net clone(based around) called Pinta.

Not sure about Flash development but for Video editing there is KDEnlive or OpenShot.

If you want to develop software like Visual Basic for Windows there is Gambas for Linux.

There are some people who need all the features of Photoshop, and for that, installing Wine is my recommendation, but you are free to try The Gimp, Gimpshop, GimPhoto, to name a few.

For editing films/video, there is Open Video Editor might work for you. CineFX might also work as an After Effects clones.

There is a few other sites around for Linux Alternatives you might want to look into, like OSalt, that can help you along this path.

I have tried Ubuntu Studio and it has a lot of programs for image, video and audio editing or creation. It's well configured to do the best with your digital media.
