Minimum requirements are: 512 MB of RAM, 5 GB free HDD space and 1 GHz Processor. If you need to install any driver Ubuntu will tell you on startup. Usually only you have to install NVidia or ATI graphic card drivers (if you have any)...nothing else since Ubuntu it's able to configure other hardware by default.

    Screw Google! Ask me!

You can install Ubuntu on a 8 Gb partition but more space means more app and more media for Ubuntu. If you don't have enough RAM (your system has 1 GB RAM) your SWAP would be 2 GB. Ubuntu support a lot of hardware so 99% of your laptop hardware would be recognized. May be the only driver for install would be the video if your laptop has a dedicated one, it easy to install.

You can use the Ubuntu partition manager to do that. During installation you will be asked were to install and then select custom, this way you will be able to resize the current partitions. For more see here .

If you're using Ubuntu on a laptop, I'd recommend it have a powerful CPU and a decent amount of ram to make your life a bit more usable. I'd say at least 1 Gig of RAM, 10 GB free HDD space and 2 GHz Processor, just because of all the weight and eyecandy. As for partitioning, the installer has the choice to do it all for you if you want.

The only drivers you might need, on a laptop, would be wireless/wifi which rarely works at best, and video, which is usually autodectected and doesn't break... though I stress usually because I've got breakage on my desktop at the moment with ATI.

If you prefer to create space on your HDD, before installing Linux, then all you need to do is resize the partition that currently has Windows and leave the new free space as "unallocated". Then, once you install Linux, you can choose the option to "Install Linux to the largest free space" and the installer will format and install it there for you.

    ram: 2.00 GB RAM
    hdd: 160 GB
video: 128 MB ATI Radeon X1200 Series + 702 MB shared graphics memory
