    Best distro for low memory systems?

    My aunt's computer has 224mb of RAM.
    Linux Mint and Ubuntu don't even boot into the Live Environment.So i cannot install them .
    I want install a feature packed distro like Linux Mint ,but it should have very low requirenment.It should run smoothly on 224mb of RAM.

    Can anybody recommend some nice distros for low ram systems??

    2 that I know of are:

    Puppy Linux (the GUI is a bit ugly imo but you will be impressed by how many apps it manage to 'squeeze into it's small size)...
    Damn Small Linux...I've not tried it yet but others have sworn by it...

    Puppy Linux , Flexxxpup (my favorite), Austrumi Linux . DSL is ugly like Slax.
    Live cd for internet browsing - SliTaz with Midori browser . Fast as HELL!

    If you're looking for something like Mint but light, Peppermint might work for you, Austrumi broke on updating so I can't recommend it. FlexxxPup is nice though, so is Puppy Linux.

    Yep...they do. But don't expect them to be as user friendly as Ubuntu or Mint.

    since puppy linux 5 is build on ubuntu 10.04 id recommend it to anyone... with low memory
    P.S: mint is also built on ubuntu.

    and i dont knw y ubuntu or mint doesnt work for u on 224MB RAM i had a p3 with 184MB ram and the only problem was the VGA!!

    Their own versions of it, yes. You'll have to manually install them yourself as they are highly heavy (OpenOffice, at least. It will have a media player.)

    If you want a lightweight copy of OOo, you could use ABIWord

    Try installing jaunty on it and then run it with LXDE or openbox session managers,, I use this on my 6 yer old laptop having a celeron m processor , with 224 mb of ram and 40 gigs of HDD.

    You could give wattOS ago its super fast, light weight and power efficient. It will breath new life into your old PC. It users Openbox a very lightweight, highly customisable desktop environment, well suited to older machines. Currently wattOS is at RC1 stage, based upon Ubuntu 9.10.
