(PROBLEM SOLVED)Help Need! wireless not working on ubuntu 10

    Dear all,

i just bought my new laptop MSi wind u230, and make it dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10. the installation of both are done, W7 are doing ok with everything, but i have a problem with my wireless on ubuntu, it doesn't detect the network, i try to connect directly with but i still unable to connect to internet.

i had really bad experience last time with windows, and since then i decide not to really use it, at the moment i still need them as i am new in linux, specially for some working things. i was about to buy apple even, but i change my mind because i would have more problem in case something happen with those fancy thing.so for now linux in the best i guess

i hope somebody could help me here, so that i can start again with my ubuntu.

    thank you

What version of Ubuntu are you using? And how do you turn the wireless on( I mean do you need to press/touch any button)? If so, I think it will be the touch activation to not work properly. Ubuntu is one of OS that have a lot of knowledge on PC hardware.

Wireless in Linux is hit or miss. It works or it doesn't.

I don't have enough experience to even begin to try and help in this matter, and would suggest you go to the Ubuntu forums and see what they can do for you. They should be able to have you up and going quickly.

I use Ubuntu too and to adjust screen brightness I have to pres FN + F6 or F7 but it not working for me on Ubuntu. So you should find another way to turn on the wireless. My laptop have a hardware key to turn it on/off wireless so there is no problem. I don't know what to suggest more to solve this problem but as hellnoire said :
would suggest you go to the Ubuntu forums and see what they can do for you.
Hope there will be a solution!

The Ubuntu Forums have been a big help to me in the past and they are very good about answering questions in a prompt manner.

My problem solved. as i said, i use computer brand msi wind u230. so may this trick only work for this type of computer :

to solve this problem you have to be connected to internet. well since my wireless does not working i have to use cable. thanks god my cable lan connection is working. so, plug you cable connection :

type this command in terminal :
    1. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:markus-tisoft/rt3090
    2. sudo apt-get update
    3. sudo apt-get install rt3090

also you could donwload the driver here : https://launchpad.net/~markus-tisoft/+archive/rt3090
that all, if after this your wireless still not w0rking. restart your computer.

thank you for all your help. it took a while for me to make it work on my computer, and honestly during that time i had stop by on other knowledge of linux world and ubuntu. and i enjoyed it a lot. off course sometime you feel like to give up. ;p
