Get Linux Power on Your Windows PC with Cygwin

We believe that everyone who considers themselves a computer enthusiast should have at least some experience with a Linux environment, but it can be daunting to just jump into the deep end of a completely unfamiliar operating system. One way to get your feet wet is with Cygwin, a free program that provides you with a Unix-like command line, without having to leave Windows. Cygwin is not a Unix emulator (it cannot run native Unix programs, although it does contain the tools needed to compile and run a program from source code), but it does have a wide array of optional packages that let you use most of the tools and utilities that you would commonly use in Unix, in Windows. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get Cygwin set up, the basics of how to navigate a Unix file system, and how to find more information as you need it.

I've used it as a tool while teaching Unix as well as Linux. I got my company to buy copies with the Korn shell emulation.

Thanks Alboguy. For me personally, I still like installing and running the various Linux Distros in their own partition. It seems like the best way to experiment with and get to know more about Linux, at least for me that is.

Thank you for the link Alboguy i enjoyed the read, there was alot of talk about linux on netbooks, which makes alot of sense, but it is lack of education for average users where this fails to deliver..

I've heard of Cygwin, never covered nor touched it because it doesn't strike me as a style of how I'll want to deal with Linux... that's my thoughts at least.

Oh well... I might try it out now that my 32 bit computer will be a complete testing computer now.

It has been bought, and it will be ready for me when I get home Monday. I've yet to try it since I'm still in the States... but I know how it will work on Monday/Tuesday. Should be a beast of a 64bit machine... I might make a thread about it. Who knows yet? lol

Something to look forward to when you get home, eh? I think you should make a thread about it. I for one, would be interested in reading about your experiences.
