How to backup my /etc and /home directories on a separate partition?

Just in case I make mistake that requires a complete reinstallation.
I'm using Lubuntu. Can Lubuntu do it or I have to get a third party software?

I would suggest trying something like Redo Backup and Recovery. The program is run from LiveCD and you can backup Linux partitions on another drive. I've never tried backing things up to a partition on the same drive, so I can't say about that. But with most disk imaging software, it isn't recommended.

If you make a mistake that requires complete reinstallation, you've done the thing in the sticky I asked people not to do, or removed the kernel and commented out all your repos.

But if it's in a different partition, don't worry about it. When you reinstall, it will pick up the pre-partitioned setup, and just reset it as the /home folder via Gparted in the install. Just make sure you do a manual partition so you can select it, that's all.
