There's an extremely easy way to install them.

Open the menu you used to launch the applications, then look for 'Add/Remove Programs'.

Most times, you will never have to download off the sites and compile your packages.. most times, you can use the repositories which have them pre-built for you.
pacman -Syyu life not found in sync db

In Ubuntu 10.04 you can use the Ubuntu Software Center to install and un-install applications. Simply click on "Applications" in the top left part of your screen and Ubuntu Software Center should be listed. You can search for the software packages you want to install. To un-install packages, click on "installed software" in the Ubuntu Software Center menu and un check the box to the left of the package and click on "remove". The Synaptic Package Manager under "System", "Administration" is another way you can add or remove packages, or you can use the GDebi Package Installer.

If you have no internet connection in Ubuntu, you should work on getting that working before installing anything. Just a thought.

Why aren't you able to connect in Ubuntu?

Salix is based on Slackware... no... definitely not.

Try asking the Ubuntu forums how to get it working under Linux, because they know a lot more then I do on connecting via phones. I'm used to connecting via a standard cable and that's it.
