Linux challenge
Rather than hijacking Johns thread about Ubuntu i have started a new post.
I was thinking along the lines of something that would challenge me to get more involved with Linux that is not been handed to me on a plate like Ubuntu, don't get me wrong i do like it and find it light to use and stable, maybe i just need something that requires more questions than answers and i can build on and become more active on this part of the forum.
This forum has a wealth of talent i would like to learn from or is there a manual about Linux that would be worthy of investment.. Windows has it's challenges but comes and goes too quickly, something i could make my own, i think would suit as i no longer rely on windows features to look around and operating system, Still something i would run on an external drive untill i decide if i want to duel boot on the local disk.
With so much available it's hard to choose, so i would prefer a good challenge i could talk to with the guys here about..

Hi Neo which distro will be best to challenge me to learn more about Linux that is at least stable enough to duel boot, im not surprised you didn't get the point as i changed half way through on John Shaws thread about Ubuntu.
Really i want a distro that i can learn the most from, where i will have to look up how to run it and that requires quite a bit of learning.

Good question Jay. Well...I think every distro offers an opportunity to learn something new. Personally I always like to start from the scratch with everything so that I can learn stuff better. So I started with the most common, well-known distro Ubuntu (GNOME). But before that I said t myself: Yeah I know what Ubuntu is and all that, but what the hell is Linux?
So I stared digging on the net through articles forums and I began to learn a little day by day. I learned what a distro is, I learned what e desktop environment is, what a package is etc. Actually this is way I learn about everything: by starting from the very basics. So if you ask me, there's no distro that can help you learn Linux. Every distro teaches you particular things, because different distros operate in different ways.
Screw Google! Ask me!

The biggest challenge would be creating a distro yourselves.

You make some very good points Alboguy. I have tried out at least 10 different distros over the past year and all of them have their little differences. I know hellnoire likes Salix and so do I, and it is a good distro to try, if you want to learn how to set up and configure something different than Ubuntu.
There may be a bit of snow on the roof, but there is still a fire blazing in the hearth!

If you want a complete challenge that you have to take on as it comes, Arch Linux and Linux from Scratch will allow for you to access and build your own system from the ground up.
I've yet to get a successful build going but mind you, it's been because I was using ATI so long, and I don't understand how to install the ATI driver when their version of a repo is hard as heck to configure.
But after I left Ubuntu/Xubuntu, I was on Mandriva for about three months, then went to Puppy Linux, then to Salix. Salix has been my choice for a while, especially because of no hiccups I've noticed. If you want something different I've named a few different distros in this post.

Thank you all for your input and this helps me out greatly and i have added Alboguys link to my favourites, from the versions here i will download each of them and give as many as i can a try, im not short of storage, and i will stick with external drives to test them out to find which suits me best, as a live session wouldn't suit my needs, VMware is great but duel booting windows and Linux seems most appealing.
