    Questions about Salix

I was just looking things over at Distrowatch and noticed that Salix now has a live cd. The version of Salix I have installed on one of my HDDs is a stand alone, in that I don't have it set up in a dual boot with windows. So that brings me to a question. Can I set up a dual boot with windows using LiLo? LiLo is the main reason I haven't used Salix as my main Linux OS, because I wasn't sure exactly how it would work. Another question I have is which desktop version is more user friendly, LXDE, or Xfce? I have heard good things about LXDE, but have never used it.

As far as I know yes, LILO detects the Windows loader. As for LXDE I'm a big fan of it but it lacks some very basic options. It's difficult to customize it the way you want. So I'd say that Xfce is more featured than LXDE but I don't like it.

BTW LILO might be buggy but it works most of the time...

LILO would detect your Windows, provided you only have one Windows OS installed. And personally, I love LXDE... but it's still lacking compared to XFCE, so use XFCE for now is my two cents.

Thanks guys, that helps. Looks lile Salix will now become my primary Linux Distro. I just don't like what they did to Fedora.

Downloaded and burned the .iso to cd. When I restarted my PC with live cd in place it took forever for Salix to load. I mean it had to be over 5 minutes! I don't know if its just my PC being older, but this is the 2nd distro I've had problems with, the other being Ubuntu 10.10. Before that, I never had any problems with any live cds. Anyway, once Salix loads, then up pops this login box for a user name and password. Well, I created both of them, but when I tried to log in it came up with "incorrect user name or password". So whats up with that? Why would Salix being run from live cd need a user name and password and why can't I seem to create them? And there aren't any instructions on how to do it.

I believe it offers the information of what their default username/password is on their forums...

I just do an install, don't bother using LiveCDs. I find they don't portray Linux in the best light, myself.

I downloaded the .iso from a Distrowatch link instead of from the Salix website, where I saw they had the root password and user name shown by the download link. Live and learn I guess. Normally once the live cd has booted it goes straight to the desktop, except in some cases, and my PC happens to be one of them. But Salix is the only Linux live cd I've had this problem with. Go figure. I usually use a live cd to install Linux Distros to my hdd, as I found live cds can come in handy for testing purposes if something goes wrong with the hard disk installation. One case in point was I used the Ubunu 9.04 live cd to re-install GRUB, when I suddenly couldn't boot my system normally. Just a personal preference I guess.
