Can't get Ubuntu to boot
I have a computer with a bad registry hive and won't boot so I burned Ubuntu 10.10 to a CD and tried to use it..The ubuntu screen comes up but when I try to do anything with it it comes up with an error box that says, I/O error..then underneath that its got, Error reading boot CD. Reboot..When I do that it comes up the same thing..anybody know what could cause this?? Oh, up in the left hand corner of the screen are the numbers 04428082.. Would Really like to get it up and running by Christmas..ho ho ho (-: Thanks in Advance..WH

That happens all the times with those soon to be(or already) out-of-time old tech CDs..
I/O error simply means that there is a problem in reading the CD, it can happen due to error during Burning the disk(maybe u wr just too curious to do it, and u set the speed to max and Voila it is gone now), or the disc got corrupted some other way..
anyways what u can try now is to burn another disc on slower rate or just pick up a USB and install ubuntu via the USB, I prefer the USB method more coz its faster and looks more geeky :P

And christmas is still far, it will just take about an hour..

tarung makes a good point. Just burn the CD with low speed and try again. And I'd suggest you to use something lighter like Lubuntu or Puppy if you wish to do do the job quickly coz Ubuntu requires minimally 1 GB of RAM to boot up.

Hmm..Both you have Opened my Eye's..What I'd like to do is get the info off the corrupt hard drive then install windows 7 pro..Its an Old but very Good computer..all the drives are practically new..It's got a gig of RAM and a 320gb hd..Will that be enough just to surf the net?? Thanks for the quick response..Going to go the USB way but re-burn a CD just for the learning (-: WH

K, re-burned a CD at the right speed (i think) and now it tells me: This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot please use kernel appropriate for your CPU..Now that I do not understand..What am I doing wrong??

I think you've downloaded the wrong image file. Make sure to download the 32 bit version.

yea, agree wid alboguy, Diving in deep, you will find 2 versions of most of OSs today that are 32bit(x86) and 64 bit(x64),DOS was 8 or 16 bit, 64 bit is more futuristic, so as u said that u have an old box it might lack supporting x64, So u need a 32bit version of ubuntu (or any other OS u choose),
here is the direct : http://www.releases.ubuntu.com/10.10/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso
if U got bandwidth problem try using using zsync file ..........

This is the reason why you burned a CD I guess, to backup the data, isn't it? Just locate the files and copy them to another partition or an external memory.
