    Ubuntu 11.04 Display Problem

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and tried it out using a pen drive. But the display is not working properly. I can't explain what exactly the problem is therefore I have included a couple of screenshots below.

The menus are all flickering and by default gnome is desktop manager and not unity.

    My computer config is:-
Intel P4 with HT (3 GHz)
    512 MB RAM
    80 GB HDD
    No separate graphics card

I thought it might be due to the lack of memory but even gnome is not working properly and the minimum system requirements listed for Ubuntu 11.04 are 384 MB of memory.

Installing Ubuntu also does not solve this problem.

The installation file is OK as I have used it to install Ubuntu on another machine without any problems.

What could be the problem and the possible solution?

ubuntu now requires a bit good specs .
it looks that you dont have any gfx card which might be causing the problem.

Install it as I think gnome would still work

Yeah, Ubuntu's moved up since needing that little bit of specs, would recommend either added a video card or some more ram...

Have to agree with this. My PC is about 5 years old now and I have had problems running the newer versions of Ubuntu. I have Mandriva installed at the moment and it runs great.

I tried running some commands to determine the problem. In one of the commands it showed an error that OpenGL 1.4 was not supported and hence I could not run unity. But I still don't know why gnome's not working.

Because the way Ubuntu made their current version, it needs both Gnome AND Unity...

Well then it sums it up really. Ubuntu gnome can't run without unity and unity can't run on my desktop.

P.S: I might soon be shifting to Fedora 15.

Fedora is a good OS, I just don't like having to fight SELinux. If I was going with an RPM-distro build, I'd lean more torwards Mandriva.

My reason for switching to Fedora is I kind of like the new interface of Gnome 3. I am not 100% sure whether fedora will run smoothly on my system but its definitely worth a try.

About Mandriva, I have started hearing a bit about it lately especially about its speed.

If I had choice between Mandriva and Fedora 15 which one would you recommend to me, keeping my system specifications in mind and considering the fats that I don't require very advanced features, I will be the only one in my house using Linux and speed will be of highest priority followed by a bit of eye candy.

@ darnee I have Mandriva installed and I really like it. It was easy to install and it runs very well on my older PC.
