Thread: Do we need a firewall for Ubuntu ?

    Installed, but it shows only 3 options for both incoming and out going

    1. Allow

    2. Deny

    3. Reject

    I set both to allow, but how will it help ? We need both incoming and outgoing, right ?

    Not really, no. If the port isn't being used by a software, it shouldn't be opened by default, assuming your default is deny all.

    If you deny all/reject all, then allow ports 80,8080, and the ports you'd use otherwise, you should be fine.

    Thanks hellnoire. I do not use torrents, mainly browsers like Firefox, Opera and Chromium. May be Pidgin and empathy. So only 80 and 8080 will do ? And shall I set reject all by default ?

    Firewall is must for linux as it will make your computer safe and not impact speed or performance like av
