Hi,
I received my ubuntu 8.04 cd a few days back but can't figure out how to install it 'inside windows' so that dual-boot is possible.
I tried the "Install inside windows' option allocating 4GB of memory in my D drive while running Windows. I was asked to remove the disk and reboot and did so. When I restarted the PC, and chose ubuntu while booting, it opened something where I had to type in 'help' to get a list of 'in-built commands' after the loading screen was shown. I did, but then, could not do anything further.
Does the CD have to be inside the driver while I run it?

Ok, I was in too much of a hurry so I went to XP after trying it several times as it opened the same type 'help' page after showing the loading screen. The login screen never came up. When I opened it with the CD inside, it still showed the 'Install' icon, meaning it had not been installed though 4.41 GB in my D drive was occupied?
So, I uninstalled it.
Now, I want to know, is it possible to install it while running the demo as a dual-boot with XP. If yes, can it be done without losing all my data. Does partioning mean I will end up losing all data?
I need a guide on how to install ubuntu 8.04 in such a way that both Windows and ubuntu can be booted and my memory is not lost. Explain the partition in detail please, if possible.
Just for information, I have a 40 GB hard disk with C and D drives. 863 GB is free on C and 10.4 on D. My RAM is 256+512 MB.
(I know I have written too much but I couldn't help myself)
Thanks in advance,
Kalpit

You might want to check out [url=https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide]Wubi.
Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way.

That is exactly the same thing which comes up when I chose "Install inside Windows" in the CD while I am running Windows.

As I told you, I got no further instructions on rebooting as the Wiki guide says and it just didn't work without CD. It showed some command page, which said type 'help' to get list of 'in-built commands'.

You can copy the ISO and Wubi onto your hard drive and install from there.

Ok, I installed it successfully but now face a new problem :(
When I started ubuntu, it showed a notification that all the drivers were not installed and gave an option to install them. I did so and the installation of my graphics card started.
When it was done, it asked me to restart the computer. On doing so, as soon as the black and orange ubuntu loading screen finishes, my monitor shows a message that the signal is not strong enough. Is it due to the graphics card?
Do I have to do it all over again? Please help out.
Thanks again.

I've got it sorted out.
Thanks for the support though ;)
