Google has surpassed RIM as leading platform supplier in the U.S. smartphone market. Apple is holding on to the market share it has, but RIM, Microsoft and Palm are in a freefall.
31.2% of all U.S. smartphone users now own an Android phone, according to Comscore. Google increased its market share by an astonishing 7.7 points between October 2010 and January 2011. RIM dropped by 5.4 points to 30.4% and is now ranked second. Apple follows in third place with 24.7% share (+0.1 points).
The three companies account for 86.3% of the U.S. smartphone market. Microsoft is following in fourth place with a share of 8.0%, surrender nearly 18% of its market share between October and January. Back in August of 2010, Microsoft held 10.8% of the market and it appears that the decline in market share is accelerating, if we believe the data provided my Comscore.
Comscore said that 65.8 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones by the end of January.
