    there is a way to get the rubber sleeve off to re solder it, its a Technic that i use to repair laptop chargers ,soke the plug in hot water so the rubber becomes soft and then slide off the rubber sleeve ,heat it up again with a hair dryer to slide it back on

    That is a very useful thing to know and I'll give it a try but having had another look at it I think it might be beyond repair.
    It's amazing the tricks you pick up over the years to get round things like that.

    Yes the idea of universal charger is damn good.
