    Need help with wifi .....?

OK, i would appreciate it if someone could help me. My question is , at the moment i am using a wireless USB adpater ( ALFA AWUS036H ) to catch wifi from a public hotspot to use internet on my PC. I also have a US Robotics Wirelss Maxg ADSL Gateway. What i want is 2 things. One to be able to share on another Computer the public wifi i catch with the wireless adapter using the Us robotics modem , with the other pc being connected to the us robotics modem through ethernet cable.

and the second thing i want is to transmit the internet i catch through my wireless usb adapter , through the us robotics modem wirelessly so that i may use it on my cellphone or laptop with wifi.

Well, i ve tried to explain my query as best as possibe. But if any more info is required to solve my problem i would be glad to provide it. Thanks in advance, and hope to get a reply.

God i love these scenarios, they are a personal violation of rule #1, just because you can do a thing, doesn't necessarily mean you should. Ha. With that said, You might try the following:

abandon all network connections on your computer and connect an ethernet cable from the ethernet jack on you computer to a lan port on your modem.

log into the modems device page, according to USR it is http://192.168.1.1 and see if you can change the LAN ip address of the device, if so, do it, and remember what the new address is, I would recomment 192.168.1.10 or 192.168.1.110, be sure to write down the new address as you will need to change your login page to reflect the changes like http://192.168.1.110

    Log back into the device.

Setup your wireless access security on your device, WPA-PSK or WPAPSK2 Or WEP, What ever floats your boat.

Then Disable DHCP in the LAN section.

(I wasn't able to get my hands on a manual or i would give exact directions, so please don't flame me for the general guideline.)

    Save your settings.

The rest of this is dependant on the version of Windows you are using. You can use ICS or Network Bridging. Since you probably don't want the ISP to know your running multiple connections through your captured signal, i would suggest ICS since it uses NAT. Now Connect your computer to the wireless hotspot, don't remove any cables. When you are connected to your hotspot, If you are using windows vista or newer, bring up the network and sharing center and click on your wireless adapter, this should bring up the status window. Select Properties and go to the Sharing tab, and enable ICS, If you have more than 1 ethernet card you may have to select the card being used to host your network access.

Finally, once you have established your ICS, connect a second computer to the ethernet connection of your modem and see if you recieve an IP address from the Computers ICS service. You will know if you have done so by looking at the computers default gateway, it should read 192.168.1.1 which is the ICS default gateway.

if this works, then connect a computer to the wireless side of your device and authenticate with your modem using the security method you chose earlier.

See if windows hands you and IP address, then check your internet connection to see if the Access Point is functioning.

    Good Luck =D
