So you're trying to connect your Xbox360 to a laptop via ethernet.
Is the ethernet cable a cross-linked network cable or the normal one?

Limited connectivity as in Local Access Only?

use the lan cable to connect to your router then thru shared folder you can access it via your laptop.

limited connectivity on vista+xbox
As raymond said, you should be using a crossover ethernet cable to connect both.
1) Since you are using Vista Check your network location first by going into,
control panel-->network & sharing center(ncpa.cpl)
>at the top, click on customize to change your location to private and test from there (* This will allow your computer to be discoverable)
Hope it works

Ahmad
