    wireless network hook up

Since I've had to do without my desktop for 2 weeks now, (the kids messed it up) I thought i might try to set the kids up with their own PC. I have a 2 yr old gateway Desktop,XP Pro, hooked up with Verizon Fios. Verizon said my modem is also a wireless router? they installed a coax cable to the router and the desktop works great. I bought a laptop 6 months ago, called verizon and they walked me through a few steps and my laptop works all over the house, yard and everything is great. My question: I have a ten year old desktop,Win 98, 8 GB HD, 256 ram. that i want to install upstairs without running any cables. This old dinesour has no wireless card/adapter/PCI card networking capabilities?? And things like that. What would I need to buy to use this PC upstairs so the kids can Google some homework stuff, look at the MYspace stuff and use the internet for some things. No lightning speed game ing stuff, just an E-mail, and the basic's. In the past I have installed memory, new power suppy, did some minor internal repairs, so putting in a card would be easy, it's the network and software I don't know about? any advise?? Jimmy

My advice, if it's that old, is start rolling out the cables, or even better would to be to buy them a netbook.

Reason being, laptops that are that old are going to fail sometime VERY soon, and there's no real reason to be updating something that old anyway. If it's ten years old, it would cost you more then the $200-450 to buy something to update it, so it would work out a bit cheaper to run wires or buy them a netbook.

That being said and if you seriously want to ignore that advice, look around for a wireless USB stick. I can't assure you the drivers would be compatible with something so old.. but you might luck into one that does.
