    Search Network monitoring

Does anybody suggest a good and free network monitoring utility to monitor a LAN based network for traffic and entrance of users (logger) with time stamps, no much control needed. Total numbers of client terminal on the network is approx. 8.

Your server should have .log files that will provide that info.

If it is a Linux server you can use Webmin with bandwidth monitoring, that's what I use, you process traffic and it shows you a report from the network daemon, It somtimes stuffs up for me but is fine, you can show, hourly, daily, or monthly, and i think even yearly reports.. but google around for more alternatives.

There are millions (not really but it seems like it) of apps. You just want info, right? Not control? Just to know, who or which terminal accesses the network and when?
GFI Langaurd (Only free for up to 5 ips though)

    Softperfect network scanner

The list is literally endless. Go to sourceforge and look through network, monitoring

If you are looking for something that monitors which user on each particular terminal, rather than just which ip you'll need to use something much more serious. Doing that from a monitoring port would take a dedicated sys, or your terminal, to run it. Of the top of my head the only free things that MIGHT be able to accomplish something like that are
    Wireshark
    snort
    untangle

All of which either take knowledge of how the run or the willingness to learn and a LOT of free time.
    Suggestion.
eventlog to syslog sender (http://sourceforge.net/projects/el2sl/ and then some kind of monitoring server software like kiwi syslog server. You will however have to install the el2sl on each terminal as a service
