Local Network stops when Internet is down
At my restaurant I have a local Windows XP Pro network with 2 computers - one works as server and station and the other one as a workstation. We have an Internet broad band (I think it is ADSL - has a specific cable modem) connection. As it is a franchise, the internet connection is used for sending sales reports ( automatically by the software ) and for support thru LogMeIn with the software supplier. A couple of days before new year we had a storm and the internet connection was dead and the local network almost stopped working. When trying to see the network in DOS mode everything was OK. Could copy files very fast between computers, open files in the server from the workstation etc. But when working in windows the speed was almost zero, that is, if a command would present results immediately if the network was working properly, in this case it could take 5 or 10 minutes for any result to show up. On last Sunday night, the internet was fixed and so my network. I've seen a similar problem happen before on the office I work, where we have the internet down several times. Then I can't even load Word or Excell because both start looking for the network printer and it seems it can't be found if the Internet is down. Word doesn't loads for a looong, really long time (again 5 or 10 minutes).
Is there a way this can be corrected? I don't have the option to disable the Internet access with the software at the restaurant, but I can't work with only one computer also. I've tried to repair connection, disable and enable the network card and even ipconfig /renew and nothing helped.
tks in advance.
