    1. Does the device manager show NIC?
    2. when ethernet cable is connected, does it shows as connected in network settings or if the icon in system tray?
    3. did he check the internet settings, gateway, subnet being same both on laptop + desktop?
    4. does the NIC show a green led on the connector?

Check the Ethernet adapter status from Network connection in control panel. What it is showing ??
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

    Happy

What about that router? Try to connect that cable on other ports also or try another router if that's possible.

My router goes end of the line after lightning hit some years ago. Power was on and green light shine like normally but still nothing to do.

When he put a new NIC in, did he install new drivers?
If the cable works for the laptop, but does not for the desktop, the the problem is either the router will not release the connection from the laptop or the desktop has some problem.
    1. turn off router & desktop,
    2. connect cable to desktop
    3. turn on router
    4. power on desktop.

If this doesn't work, then try another cable to another port in the router.
