Check the ping from win7 to xp first, Disable windows 7 firewall too. Just check the workgroup(must be same), private ip range (must be same) and the ethernet cable of the xp pc.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

Refresh the network windows when you can't see the desktop, it works for me.

Hmm configure tcp/ip settings in both first. Use same workgroup & same private ip range in both. You can also assign static ip on both. Eg-
win7- 192.168.1.3, Default gateway- 192.168.1.1 (the router address)
xp - 192.168.1.2 , DG- 192.168.1.1 (the router address)
Subnet mask- 255.255.255.0
workgroup- Anything (must be same on both).
This will help you
. Good luck.
