Problem with network after putting xp on my windows 7 network
How I connect to the Internet and my xbox 360:
I use a usb 3g mobile broadband dongle to connect to the Internet and through sharing the connection I can also use xbox live with my xbox attached to the local adapter with a ethernet cable. The dongle Is very fast top speed of 7.2mbps and I usually get anywhere between 4.0 - 7.0.It has worked like this for months with no problems until I put xp on instead of the xbox.
How the problem came about:
I have had this problem for about a couple of weeks now, everything was fine until I was fixing a friends netbook with xp on It.To make sure everything was fine and to update It I plugged a ethernet cable into my local port from the netbook, when I did this something popped up but It was a very long day and now it was nearly 4 am in the morning,so I just pressed ok.Everything worked fine the xp could connect to the internet through my internet connection, unhooked xp and turned computer off and went to bed.
When I put my computer on the next day I had It set back up to my xbox but all I kept getting was unidentified network, trouble shooting gave me a message about no ip address.I have tried everything I can think of and more to fix this problem but no Joy.I can get the xbox connecting to the Internet if I goto properties on my local adapter and manually type In the ip address for my computer and gateway etc Into the ipv4 properties(the usb dongle does not use ipv6).It will still say unidentified network but at least It works.
I f I run belarac advisor It gives me two ip addresses, the first one is fake as it begins with 169 and under that one is the correct one does anyone know if that is normal.
Oh and this Is now a fresh Install as I fiddled around that much I had to reinstall, this did not bother me because I thought at least this will fix It...No I was wrong still the same Issue.I have looked online and noticed a lot of people with similar issues starting from when windows 7 first surfaced.
Every-one on here Is always very friendly and even knowledgeable so I am hoping that someone will know the answer.
If someone can help I will paste the results from ipconfig soon.

Right away, I can see your problem. Your subnet mask.
255.255.255.255
That won't let a damned thing though no matter what you do.
Change it to 255.255.255.0 and see how it works at that point.

Hi hellnoire. The subnet mask for the 3connect usb dongle, how do i change that as it is set up to automatic and there Is no option to type one in manually,i can assign a static address but no optiions come up for subnet mask like it does on the local adapter when i change those settings, also 3connect works fine its the local ethernet adapter that wont find its own address,i have to manually type it in to get it to work even though it still comes up as unidentified network.
Thanks
The way everything Is set up at the minute I have It all working but still get unidentified network on my local ethernet.
Got to go to work now but will check back In later.

I think 255.255.255.255 is ok 92.41.223.103/32 (VLSM). Also 92 belongs to class A so default mask 255.0.0.0 . Update here richie. Little bit busy today will see tomorrow.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

I am lost when It comes to networks, what does VLSM means.
Here are my settings for ipv4 on my local ethernet, these used to be all set to automatic like they still are on three connect, but the only way i can get things working is to manually type these settings.
http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/u.../3connect1.png
Here Is how things look on my network screen,I can even get the unidentified network to say home but still unidentified.
http://i644.photobucket.com/albums/u...9/3connect.png
One more thing I am sure it never used to say multiple networks.

There is a reason why manually will work: because automatic is locking you to 255.255.255.255. Which won't work. You would have to change it to manual to change it.
Easiest way to describe what you did: 255.255.255.255 blocks everything in a subnet mask. 0.0.0.0 allows all. 255.255.255.0 allows for some.
As for the multiple networks, are you running any virtual machine software by any chance?

Hi hellnoire,I have no option to change the subnet mask on 3connect iv4p settings unlike on my local ethernet where i can change things,3connect has only automatic setting no other option.I am not running any virtual software at all.3 connect is running and working exactly like it should it is my local port that is playing up,unless I am totally wrong,to unsure to know really but I have looked for settings to change in 3 connect but there are none available.
This all started when i put xp onto my local ethernet port something must have changed at first I thought it could be xp changed the workgroup name to mshome but when i check it is set to what windows 7 uses workgroup. If i look in the registry settings for this workgroupname i find 3 instances of mshome.net but changing these to workgroup did not fix things either, and after checking another windows 7 machine It should be mshome.net.I am very frustrated by It all,I can usually fix things or failing that, then a reinstall works, but niether in this case.

@richie1913, You try to see and read here, here and Understanding Subnet Mask. Hopefully you can find out..

Solin thanks I will read that.I have just did a hijack this scan and It looks like some obvious things are wrong, but I am to unsure to be sure,so If someone else could have a look i would be grateful. Also if i understand things correctly If the subnet mask 255.255.255.255 was the problem on the 3connect dongle the surely nothing would work but as i have said everything is working correctly its just this stupid unidentified network problem, its done my head clean In.

Thanks.
EDIT:I have just checked all these missing files and none are missing all are present and correct.I have also ran every virus scanner under the sun,all clean, the two winsock entries at 010,I have tried to remove them but hijack this says to use a antivirus but thats a no go.I have used all kinds of ipconfig commands like release, new even treid the route delete 0.0.0.0,nothing.
How can this happen on a fresh Install thats whats annoying me the most.
