    Cool downloading speed

hi, could anyone explain to me why my downloading speed is always low, i am to 200kb/s, but i have had a new netgear router running from my landline, installed the other week, now my problem is my isp tells me i should be getting downloads of up to 1.7mb/s,( they tested my line connection as well) i,ve tired the speedtester.com and this is true i should be getting the above speed, but it is not happening. i reinstalled my os the other day ( had to) and tried downloading with no firewall and security, and it was still the same download speed 200kb/s,so now i am at a loss as in what to do. except turn to the masters on this forum,

    thanks

    200kb/s is not slow mate!

The reason why your getting a speed slower than what your ISP tells you is because of many reasons

    • You live far away from the ISP Point place thingy
    • The server is slow
    • Many more - cant remember

Well you should call your ISP to come and test because they have a device just for testing the download and upload speed. That will be more accurate.

Mark it is 200Kb and not 200KB. 200Kb is at snails pace.

200kilobits per second is only 25kilyBYTES per second.
To convert from bits to bytes, just divide it with 8 since 8 bits = 1 byte.

    Confused re: line speed

hi, cheers for the reply and the correction, like i said the line as been tested for download speed, but what i don,t understand is when i did my own speedtest it give the same reasult 1.7 mb ish, so are the tcp settings not configured properly or something like that,by the way it is the same on a torrent, and port fowarding is been done aswell, is there not a software to tweak the settings in vista,or iis it a case of grin and bear it ,

    thanks over to you
