Changing order of Domain Controllers
Hi,
I wonder if you could help me with a query I have regarding our domain controllers. About a month ago, I very stupidly created a GPO which locked me and every other username, including Administrator, out of the network or stopped the launching of any applications if it was already logged on (I wanted to create a GPO to stop software installations using only my account as a test, except it actually stopped applications from being launched rather than installed. This GPO crashed AD and I remade it except this time I forgot that it was still applied to All Authenticated Users by default and you can guess the rest....
). The only way that I could correct this issue was to log on locally and find GPMC which I used to get to the GPO. However, it wouldn't allow me to access my PDC as it said it was unavailable so I had to use the Change Domain Controller option in order to get at our secondary DC to disable this GPO. Now, we find that Vranger doesn't want to take a snapshot of the PDC which I couldn't reach that wonderful night (error is 'API Call failed with message: The operation is not allowed in the current state'). We also see intermittent postings to the Event Viewers on some of the machines whereby they say they can't reach the Domain Controller. When I give the Systeminfo command on these machines it tells me that it's pointing to the original PDC as it should. However, I think it's too much of a coincidence as both the Vranger snapshot and PC-DC issues only started that night.
Can you advise, if I use the Change Domain Controller option in GPMC (it currently reads This Domain Controller radio button >> then it lists the machine which I changed to and then the PDC in that order), can I expect any problems? Is there anything that I need to do before or after changing the order back because I don't want to make it any worse than it already is?
Many thanks,
Justin.

Which os you are using 2003 or 2008 ?? Have a look here.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

Hi INDRANIL,
It's 2003. Thanks for that - yes, I had previously read this document and found it to be very informative but I was just wondering if, from their own experience, users could advise if there is anything which I need to watch out for? The setup is working okay for the moment even with the loss of snapshotting on the PDC and the random event logs so I don't want to make it worse than it already is by changing the DC and oops, my machines can't connect to AD anymore
. For instance, once I choose my PDC from the list and hit Next, should I expect to wait a few hours while the network and 2 domain controllers synch up?
Many thanks,
Justin.

Thanks for the advice Indranil - can you advise if you have done this before or if I should expect any problems or if it will take a long time to synch? I can run it over the weekend if needs be but I'm just wondering if it's as simple and choosing the correct PDC and saying OK?
