Windows 7 is a great improvement over Vista. It is FAST, has improved usability due to new SuperBar and other nifty GUI enhancement and is stable, reliable and highly compatible.

Popping in the Windows 7 DVD allows you to either Upgrade Vista to Windows 7 RC OR to have a Clean Install of Windows 7. In the Former case, all your Vista files settings including your programs will remain as it is and the OS will get upgraded to Windows 7 RC. In the latter case, you'll need a fresh partition to install Windows 7 and dual boot with Vista.
Here's an Article on the blog guiding you to [url=http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/06/17/how-to-create-full-windows-backup-by-imaging-without-using-norton-ghost/]how to backup data

Remember, Windows 7 is still in beta stage, so it might not be 100% stable although it is very stable on my PC upto now.

Also remember that you won't be able to directly Upgrade to Windows 7 final from Windows 7 RC in future. You'll need a clean install of Windows 7 Final (when it comes out) again.

If your files is not important you can do fresh install. If you have some important, buy external hard disk or thumb drive. Can backup them into your ex hard disk/ thumb drive

Yes, it is. A clean install is always better.
