It's a number assigned by Microsoft. It's supposed to show the level of performance by the particular PC.
Taking into account speed of CPU, speed of memory, speed of disk, speed of graphics, etc.
I have a rating of 7.2. What does it really mean? Whatever you want it to.
As long as you're happy with your machine, it has no meaning.

    Hi MrPSPreview..

It is clearly explained by Ande. If you want more information please read either in help files or "What is the Windows Experience Index?" here

One of the reasons this was introduced was to help in purchasing software... when it say windows compatible they should include the rating that way you can be sure that your pc/laptop will run the software...also where you may need to upgrade.. ie ram graphics card and such..Ande covered everthing else..

    It's Windows Experience Index

If you were to refer to the Help files in Windows, you'd see this:

What is the Windows Experience Index?

The Windows Experience Index measures the capability of your computer's hardware and software configuration and expresses this measurement as a number called a base score. A higher base score generally means that your computer will perform better and faster than a computer with a lower base score, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks.

Each hardware component receives an individual subscore. Your computer's base score is determined by the lowest subscore. For example, if the lowest subscore of an individual hardware component is 2.6, then the base score is 2.6. The base score is not an average of the combined subscores. However, the subscores can give you a view of how the components that are most important to you will perform, and can help you decide which components to upgrade.

You can use the base score to buy programs and other software that are matched to your computer's base score. For example, if your computer has a base score of 3.3, then you can buy any software designed for this version of Windows that requires a computer with a base score of 3 or lower.

The scores currently range from 1.0 to 7.9. The Windows Experience Index is designed to accommodate advances in computer technology. As hardware speed and performance improve, higher score ranges will be enabled. The standards for each level of the index generally stay the same. However, in some cases, new tests might be developed that can result in lower scores.

Better put than my explanation Safeguy.. my windows experience index changed between Vista Ultimate and windows 7 with the score been higher in 7 maybe this was due to the fact Vista is hog of an operating system..but im far more likely to run it again having said that, this pc can easily cope with Vista ....

Hi Jay, you must be one of those satisfied Vista users I occasionally hear about, if you plan to go back to it. I've never used Vista myself, but horror stories about it are abundant!

I think Safeguy uses Vista John, the truth of the matter was MS released the Vista upgrade utility and as soon as Vista was released i put it on a dell 4550 and it was to say the least, a real drag even though the pc filled the minimum requirments, so the next pc was quad core and 4 Gb of ram with a 750mb graphics card so i made Vista play nice or was it Microsoft made me leap for a more powerful pc.. i saw more pc's for sale here that first year with Vista only a few months old and looking at the specs there was no way they where capable of running Vista..
ok im no longer a closet Vista user and openly say i quite liked alot of things about it, like the dream scene of the waterfalls, im still waiting for the Microsoft Ultimate extras to come out
