VLC or Media Player Classic Home Cinema
Which is the better media player for watching video and movie?
(Playing music is not taking into account)
Both are open source.
Is it a must to install K-lite codec if I were to choose Media Player Classic Home Cinema and what is its function?
Thoughts are like a never ending ocean where it is deep, endless and dangerous

Choosing between VLC and MPC-HC is strictly personal choice. I use and have always recommended MPC-HC (WOT: Green). It can utilize your graphic card (DXVA/CUDA) for rendering video/movies. It supports shaders natively (up to version 4) to sharpen/filter video/movies. It is available in x86 and x64 native binaries and can support x64 codecs. It supports internal as well as external filters (*.ax installed or non-installed, both are supported). Common media files can be played without need of any extra codec. For playing certain formats (mkv, ape, flac, etc.), you can use Win7codecs (much better than K-Lite).
Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate x86 + KIS 2011 (11.0.2.556 b.a.c.d) + Sandboxie Paid (3.54) + Deep Freeze Standard (7.20.020.3398)

Hey BF.. if i have the KL pack (32 and 64) installed already.. would i have to get rid of them to add the win7codecs? or could i put that on as well and not have any issues?
currently use MPC as well.. updating to newest one now.. but also have VLC installed just in case some reason MPC doesn't play it.. have always prefered its layout and way it works over VLC

@Zug: You have to uninstall K-Lite before installing Win7codecs. Win7codecs includes all required codecs (major and minor) and any media player (including WMP) can utilize them to play any file.

Win7codecs can uninstall other codec packs (including K-Lite) during installation process, but it is always better to uninstall it yourself.

I've used VLC for the longest time, but I was thinking I might change to MPC or MPlayer for Windows.

hmm... a while back i accidently wiped my 2tb drive that had nearly 1.5tb of movies on it.. i was able to recover it with my EASUS program.. i tried a few movies and they worked. .so thought all was good.. lately ive tried a few .. and i get the message "could not render file" with MPC and VLC will load it and say that the file couldnt be played and the issue wasnt my fault or something.. so, im leading to believe that the files got jacked up after recovering... does this sound about right?? ive installed the newest MPC and installed the win7codecs and 64bit ones.. and still got same prob.. so was thinking wasnt a codec problem..
sounds like i might have to borrow friends hdd that i copied to for her and copy them back

@Zug: It happened with me too. I was aligning my secondary HDD partitions with Paragon Alignment Tool. Sudden electricity failure and later UPS exhaustion forced me shutdown the system within few minutes (both partitions size was over 100 GB). PAT earlier versions did not protect data in case of power failure. Both of my partitions became corrupted and showed free space instead of partitions. I used different utilities to recover maximum data (movies). Some of those movies/videos worked and some refused to render/play. Repairing index of those movies/videos did not help. It has nothing to do with player or codec. It might be due to incomplete recovery because of sector changes or magnetism effects.
