Slow Deleting files on Xp
Hi all
I have a HP Compaq dc5100 Microtower PC" Cpu 3 / 2mb cash 3 Gb Ram" and Xp sp3 on it
now it takes 30 seconds or more to delete a file , especially when this file in larger than 1 Gigabyte , I did not have this problem before - especially I use " shift-delete "
I had desk defragment and scanned for viruses but for no use

Is everything slower in general or is it just confined to the delete function?
What is the total capacity of the internal hard drive and how much free space is there?
It is often better to keep one's mouth shut and appear to be a fool than to open it and remove all doubt!

Try boot to Windows safe mode and see if you still experience slow in deleting files?
See this article on how to boot into Windows safe mode if you don't know how.

In safe mode , no problem deleting files is normal

If no problems deleting files in Safe Mode, that means there is an active process that is causing this behavior.
Now all you need to do is to boot in to Safe Mode again, hit Win+R and type msconfig.
Go to Startup tab and disable one of it and boot to normal Windows. Keep doing this until you are able to delete normally in Windows.
Then let us know which software that is causing this problem.

Since it works in safe mode, a 3rd party program or service is interfering. You can perform a clean boot to see what is causing the problem. Here is the method for XP:

You can follow the procedure for Vista or Seven to enable items to see what the cause is:

SP2 is not supported security update. The problem was nothing to do with SP3. Make sure the Recycle bin is empty and disable the windows search. There may be a conflict with other software.

Going back to SP2 is not a good idea. Since Safe Mode shows that there's no problem in deleting files, it is surely an active running process that is causing it, not SP3.
