Cool Moving Office XP from old laptop to new one

I had Office XP on my old laptop running 32-bit Vista. The motherboard on that one got fried so I got a new one running Windows 7 64-bit.

I still have the hard drive from the old one, and I use it as an external usb drive.

I would like to use Office XP on the new laptop but my install cd is scratched up and useless.

Just trying to run the Office programs from the old drive gets me a window saying that "Office has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup."

I know this is gonna be complicated but is anyone interested in helping me figure out how to get it to work, or how to move the whole Office installation over to my new laptop. Which files and registry keys must i copy, and where should I copy them to?

What kind of license do you have? If it is an OEM version you're probably out of luck. If not, you can try to copy your CD with a program like Unstoppable Copier etc. and burn a new disk. Or else borrow an installation disk from a friend.

(PS. just copying the files to your new HD won't work, the program must be installed)..

I highly doubt you'll ever manually get a whole office install from one o/s to another, there's just too many files and registry keys. A clean install is your only solution really.

Unfortunately, Office XP came in at least 7 different versions so we really need to know which exact version you have. You will also need the product key for a new install.

If you don't have the key and / or you're not sure of the version try this:-
Download and run Produkey.exe (inside the zip file)
Press F9 and select the 2nd option down

Assuming you have the old hdd plugged in, it will find out which version you have and your key.

If you have Office XP Pro (and you didn't have Frontpage) download this iso (I've checked and it's genuine). Then you can either mount or burn it and install with the key.

I have XP Professional with Frontpage.

How do I tell if an .iso link is genuine?

I found one here: DO NOT POST LINKS FOR DOWNLOADING SOFTWARE, THIS CAN LEAD FOR WAREZ

I think that's the correct one. Is it genuine?

Just downloaded and checked the file and it's a genuine iso (remove the .zip extension) and should be the one you need.

If old HDD has the old OS files intact, you can boot from that hdd and use the office installation. You can download office setup from any source and use the old key to activate it. Even if you do not have key, it will work for 30 days or so without any problem.

Another way is to use a Office alternative and open files in that.

Thanks Hal, I downloaded, installed & activated it (using ProduKey to get my license), and everything's working great!
