Getting VirtualBox to work on networking vista(guest) in a Windows XP Home edition

I have some problems getting Vista on a virtual network with my OS (XP Home). For some reason I can't get the VM to share folders nor the OSes.

Vista is in the virtual machine (for testing)
OS networking doesn't work on both.

    thanks.

Have you enabled the network adapter? If yes, check the device manager and see if it's functioning?
Finally, did Vista get IP Address from your router or dhcp server?

    Let me see.... brb

    VM settings: adapter 1 NAT
    adapter 2 Interface

On win xp only the TAL adapter is listed. and when run, the vm reports that networking is active. even vista "sees" the network

Vista sees 2 networks. 1 is local and another isunidentified
Also it lists the 2 adapters I enabled and fully functional
