How to install XP over Vista?
Hello everybody! I have been reading Raymond's posts every day for over a year and I think that it has helped me very much with me computer skills and knowledge.
Now I have a problem that I hope someone will help me solve. My new laptop came with Vista OS, and I prefered XP OS, but in the shop they told me that this notebook (MSI EX705X-223) only supports Vista. So I posted on MSI support site and receive an answer that it is possible to install XP but I have to flash the BIOS, because they are having one BIOS that supports Vista, and another one that supports XP. I did as they explained and after the flashing when I started the computer it stuck on a screen when asked me to enter F1 to run set up or F2 to start some kind of procedure, so I hit F1 and enter the BIOS (which now was changed to ver. 6.37, previosly 6.07), hit F9 to load default values and F10 to save and exit (this F9 and F10 was told to me by MSI support). Emediately after this the Vista started and begin to install drivers. Now I have computer that is running on Vista, and in my opinion the Vista should not even start because this is not the BIOS for Vista but for XP. Now can someone adive me what to do and how to install XP over the existing Vista.
Regards.

Since you haven't install Windows XP, it'd still boot in Vista.
When you flashed the BIOS, it only meant that the computer can now support XP. So you'd still have to either wipe out Vista to install XP or create a new partition to install XP.

Following this link I see that he managed to install XP over Vista when he flased the BIOS, but it does not explain what he did exactly. Does just insert the set up CD for XP, or previosly erased all the hard drive?

If you dont like Vista and would like XP instead I believe you can change the way Vista operates so that it runs like XP. I received this information this morning in my mail box before I logged on to Raymond. When I saw your predicament I thought it might be of some use. Have a read it could help

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/wi...19&tag=nl.e132 Thanks, but no thanks. I would really like the ordinary XP not some modified Vista to look like XP, so any comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.

If you want to install XP over Vista, just insert the XP installation disc, and boot up with it. Follow the instructions.

Something went wrong. I followed this procedure to make bootable XP CD
<a href="http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2005/12/01/slipstreaming-windows-xp-service-pack-2-and-create-bootable-cd/" >Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD</a>
and inserted in the dvd drive, it started the installation and I have selected option "Format drive C: NTFS", after the formating it started to copy files, after that it automatically rebooted. On the start up this time I did not press any key to boot from CD.... and it gave me the message "Error loading Operating System".
I repeated the whole procedure from the start and this time after reboot it stucked with the message "Press any key to boot from CD....", it did not show the same message from the previous attempt "Error loading Operating System" and it did not start anything else.
I suppose that I did something wrong when creating the bootable CD. I will try with another one and post how it went or ask for instructions.
Regards.

Maybe something went wrong during slipstreaming. If it still doesn't work, try installing Windows XP without SP. After installation, you'll just have to spend more time downloading and installing service packs :P
