    I am impressed !
I read many of the heavyweight online newsletters and blogs on a daily basis (eg ZDNet, etc) and find some to be interesting sources of intelligence (meaning "data" - as for intelligence, as in grey matter - well let's just say I sometimes despair at what the staff writers dare to put to pen - they must (like Microsoft) truly believe we are all as dim as a TOC-H lamp!) and agree that reviews per se are for the birds. The meaningful stuff is to be located in the places some correspondants have referred to above. No - if I want to gauge some intelligent and honest opinion, I do precisely what I have done here. I locate a forum where it isn't inhabitted by (paid?) apologists of Microsoft and one run by someone who has EARNED my respect - like Raymond (OK you can stop blushing now Ray). My respects to you all for your reasoned, candid, and helpful contributions.

I look forward to further responses and benefitting from your collective experiences. Thank you.

Reviews on corporate type websites are usually $$$ driven and can't always be trusted.

I personally like AV tests conducted by independent groups.

Installed VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware today and I'll make it short since it didn't really impress me.

Installation file is rather small at only 13.6MB.
    Allows 15 days trial.
Has real time active protection, automatic updates, email protection, scheduled scans, waking up computer from sleep on schedules scans, rootkit detection, scanning removable drives.

For active protection, there are 4 modes to select, Hide, Medium, Low and Custom. By default Low is being selected. Tested against 19 current virus and only 18 is being detected as threat. A .vbs virus that adds the title "Hacked by pokemon" cannot be detected. I moved up the active protection to Medium, still VIPRE could not detect that it's a threat during scan and runtime.

Private trojan is not detected nor the crypter's FUD stub are.

I'd say that VIPRE is pretty light and I don't feel that there's something lags the computer.

VIPRE cost $29.95 for 1 year subscription on a single PC. Here are some discount codes to make your subscription cheaper if you are interested in purchasing one.

    SPYINFO - $10 off
    PCANTIVIRUSREVIEWS - $10 off
    VPR251253 - 10% discount

Sadly they're the first to always pop-up currently more and more Independent test reviews are now coming the only problem is that some AV / Security vendors are refusing to accept the invitation for a review test, due to some conflicting reasons like test methodology and an acceptable test results.

To be clear paid reviews are meant only as reference guide

the best way is to test it by yourself because some reviews are just limited to the scope of they're test methodology <>

as many of them said, its really upto u. The security of a computer really depends upon ur common sense and ur online behaviour. One of my frnds uses avira, another uses avast, yet another uses zone alarm. Yet, their pc's are full of malware and viruses. I have to visit them from time to time to clean their pc's. And, i managed to keep my pc clean with no antivirus at all (for a small period of time)..! Its not that i got infected later, but i installed kaspersky when i got an offer from here.. Of course, i use linux live cd from time to time, for flash drives, ipods etc.
