NSS Labs
Consumer Anti-Malware
Which products are keeping up with cybercriminals in the anti-malware arms race? In July and August 2009, NSS Labs put 9 consumer grade products from leading vendors through our Live Testing for 17 days. Here are the key take-aways from this report:
- Products vary greatly in their ability to stop socially engineered malware
- Proactive 0-hour protection ranged from 26% to 70%
- Over the course of 17 days of 24x7 testing, overall protection varied between 67% and 96%
- In general, don't expect the same results for corporate grade products. Vendors tune products differently for different markets.
What was tested:
Live Testing captures current malware on the internet and includes new emerging threats which have not yet been classified by antivirus vendors (approximately 10% have been positively identified as malicious based on behavior) as well as some of the following well known viruses, trojans, rootkits and worms: Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface (Worm/Spreading), Net-Worm.Win32.Kolab (Worm/Spreading), Rootkit.Win32.Banker (Rootkit), Trojan.Win32.Vapsup (Browser Modifier/Trojan), Backdoor.Win32.SdBot (IRC Bot/C&C), Backdoor.Win32.PcClient (HTTP C&C Trojan).
Tested products: ( Based on their Live testing Methodology )
- AVG Internet Security, version 8.5.375
- Eset Smart Security 4, version 4.0.437
- F-Secure Internet Security 2009, version 9.00 build 149
- Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, version 8.0.0.506
- McAfee Total Protection Suite 2009
