AVG 9 is having issues right now . The OS becomes slower and responsive. So i'd advise to stay away from it.

For free Avira is the best.

Modern-day Romeo
It's clear from the article on DownloadSquad that Avira is the winner here....I will just quote some of their words here to prove my point.
1. Panda: 99.4%
2. Avira: 98.9%
3. Avast: 98.2%
4. MSE: 97.8%
5. AVG: 95.8%
6. Comodo: 74.6%
Detection isn't everything, of course.
True...although Panda scored slightly better than Avira (PC World report), you have to read this:
Cloud AV is
not ready for general use (like Avast 5), but it too has gotten good reviews so far. The one knock on Panda's offering is its
slow manual scans. Then again, you probably won't need to run those all that often, so it
might not be an issue.
Remember:
beta software is not yet considered complete or ready for everyday use.
and this:
Remember, Panda is still in beta testing so despite its amazing detection rate you may want to wait for a finished product.
Now you know why Avira wins over Panda...
Now Avast....
If you're comfortable running software that is still in development, the Avast 5 beta is looking good. That said, it's antivirus software - is using an unfinished antivirus something you really want to do?
Again, Avast V5 isn't ready for prime time use (especially for noobs)
How about MSE?
Some users have reported MSE overworking their processor, but I haven't had any such trouble so far.
Is it worth the trouble...you decide.
AVG???
AVG has gone through some ups-and-downs with techy types over the years. It used to be one of our favorites, then it seems like popular opinion turned against it.
Do I need to say anything to this? Most of us know what AVG is like...
And as for Comodo...
Sore loser....
That's it...now you know why I say Avira's the best. The only downside:
Avira offers excellent detection and fast scanning speeds, but that nag screen can get quite annoying.
But again, there are ways to disable the nag screen. No big deal. If you're not comfortable doing things the 'manual' way...then there's
a small program like Click Off.

They call me the mysterious one...
my motto is...when it's hot, chill baby
