This means somehow drop shadows for the icon levels on the desktop has been disabled. I hope you are using XP. Follow this to remove drop shadow.

    Method 1:
    1. Go to Run (Press Win + R), type sysdm.cpl
    2. Go to Advanced Tab>Performance>Settings>Visual Effects Tab
    3. Under Custom options check if "Use drop shadows for icon levels on the desktop" is clicked.

    Method 2
    1. Go to Run (Press Win + R), type desk.cpl
    2. Go to Desktop tab.
    2. Click on Customized Desktop.
    3. Go to Web tab.
    4. Check if there is any items under Web pages. If any uncheck them. Also uncheck the box "Lock desktop icons".

Hopefully this will remove the problem. This is not malware related problem.
