AV bad updates are normal. The only bad thing is the damage issue. Despite being detrimental to all units/users, it is somewhat curable to some extent by means of reversing the bad update one by a good one or via service packs... unfortunately it is not always effective.
Most licenses for software sold at retail disclaim (as far as local laws permit) any warranty on the performance of the software and limit liability for any damages to the purchase price of the software
If you're a frequent EULA reader like me, it is a different story.

As a windows user we get used to things like this as Ceyfer and Safeguy mentioned about updates, the downside with AV is the automatic updates that we have less control over, as manual would be a pain in the butt... uptill now i have yet to find a problem that could not be solved touch wood
