    FLAMING RETORT - Cooling the friction when Linux meets anti-virus

    Flaming Retort does not exist to praise our readers' best flames, nor to repeat them merely in the name of perverse humour, nor to return fire in the wearisome tradition of a flame war.

    The goal of Flaming Retort is to comment on one or two recent flames which represent a position which a significant minority seem to believe, but which isn't quite as true or as certain as they might think.

    To kick off, then, we'll consider malware on Linux. Naked Security writer Carole Theriault mentioned last week that Sophos had just won (yet another!) VB100 award for Ubuntu.

    Linux is only as secure as the users using it. You give it to someone who knows only rm -rf /*, don't expect to see your data alive!
    pacman -Syyu life not found in sync db

    When it comes to security, the way I see it is that sometimes, in addition to the policy/architecture/design that has been implemented within the OS itself, some 'beefing up' either with built-in tools or 3rd-party apps can help...the primary question being whether it's necessary and to which extent does it prove it's efficiency and usefulness in a particular setup. It's not a matter of should I use "this or that" or "this and that" but rather "which ones work right for me"?

    Whether or not an AV is required in a Linux system (or even Windows, Mac, etc) - the only man who can answer that is the one using it. It's pointless to argue over who's right or wrong as it's neither black nor white. And I don't subscribe to any statement that says something is impenetrable.

    Off topic, what about the US Federal Reserve?

    But then again, this is what a Mac seller always say;

    Mac is Virus free while with Windows, you need to worry about virus every other day
    Taken from a newspaper ad in my country.

    That's Marketing. Their job is to persuade you to buy their product/service.

    If you manage to "penetrate" the Fed, take all the cash you want, they will just print some more!
