The Security Intelligence Report (SIR) is an investigation of the current threat landscape.
It analyzes exploits, vulnerabilities, and malware based on data from over 600 million systems worldwide, as well as internet services, and three Microsoft Security Centers.
@ Neo: There will always be a technical limitation to each report and its methodology.

Based on MSRT/ MSE/Windows infection data got from their user-base. It won't always represent the real world infection analysis, but it's nice to have a comprehensive report like SIR as a reference. Just like any other security vendor's report, it will varies depending on the numbers of users, from different geographical locations,to detection of uniqe malwares samples reported and other significant factors.

I like the way you think Neo, but i imagine this is done through generated reports to AV vendors if you opt in to send reports that is...

Since when has 'legality' stop the virus authors? And wait, there's more to the malware problem than just viruses...
