Big Grin Facebook Updates | New Privacy Controls

Today we're announcing a bunch of improvements that make it easier to share posts, photos, tags and other content with exactly the people you want. You have told us that "who can see this?" could be clearer across Facebook, so we have made changes to make this more visual and straightforward. The main change is moving most of your controls from a settings page to being inline, right next to the posts, photos and tags they affect. Plus there are several other updates here that will make it easier to understand who can see your stuff (or your friends') in any context. Here's what's coming up, organized around two areas: what shows up on your profile, and what happens when you share something new.

This newest round of updates includes a ton of different privacy features. For ease of understanding, we've listed them out below:

    • Inline Profile Controls: Now, instead of editing all your privacy controls from a separate page, you can edit them right from the "Edit Profile" page. Want your favorite music to only be seen by your friends? Just hit the box next to that section and choose your privacy options. Same with hometown, photo albums, political views, and so on.
    • Profile Tag Review: Before, when someone tagged you in a photo or a post, that tag would just show up. Now, you can choose to approve or reject when other people tag you, before anyone else sees you tagged in it.
    • Content Tag Review: Similarly, when someone tags content of yours (like a photo you took), you can choose to approve or reject that tag, even if they aren't tagging you specifically.
    • View Profile As: The "View Profile As" button is now available on your profile page, so you can see what your profile looks like from other people's accounts and make sure your privacy is set correctly.
    • Inline Sharing Controls: The inline sharing controls have been edited. Now, you can change who's allowed to see any given post right from the status box and change it later on if you change your mind.
    • Tag Anyone: Now you can tag anyone in a post; not just the people you're friends with.
