When I have a doubt , then I use Linux to oprn pendrive and check it.

You can then scan inside Linux for windows viruses

Which of the 2 is better?

    Also, just curious, what about
    1. The "autorun.inf" DoesNotExist registry trick
    2. creating a read-only "autorun.inf" folder in a pen drive's root dir

    Two different methods.

Autorun.inf does not exist trick protects your computer since it does not read the autorun.inf. If someone plugs in their USB drive with a virus to your PC, your computer is not affected by it unless you run the virus from the USB drive.

Creating a read only autorun.inf on a USB is to protect your USB flash drive. If you plug in your USB drive on a computer that is infected by a malware which spreads through USB drive, then your USB drive will be safe since there is a dummy autorun.inf that is read-only.

I use No Autorun because it also protects again Link Exploit. But Antirun is more actively developed than No Autorun.

Just an update. Avast still didn't detect that file. I submit it via virus chest.

try to scan your harddisk if infected. I think your hd is infected. I also encountered that but with much worst malware. it disabled my av and everytime i unhide folders or file after a few seconds it will automatically hide by the virus. Soon i will upload the virus so that some experts would analyze the behaviour and where its hiding.
