Thanks for your reply.
Since I formatted the whole 160 gb of my hard drive, I was thinking on the same lines.

thanks for your reply!!
My computer wont boot into the normal mode or any of the safe modes now, as my computer has gone completely bonkers. It displays my bios screen, then windows xp cursor and then automatically reboots. Again, it displays my bios screes, then windows xp cursor, and then again reboots and the process goes on and on, until I hard shutdown the computer.
By the way, if it displays the bios screen and win xp cursor, I can be sure that my RAM is not the one causing problem, right?

Seems like Windows is so badly corrupted that it cannot even boot in.
Slowdowns normally is not caused by faulty RAM.
When you have faulty RAM, most of the time your computer will just restarts by itself or give you bluescreens.

So that discounts the possibility of faulty RAM!!!

I do not think that could be the cause because just two days back, I used computer ,after hard shutting down and rebooting the computer 3 times, for quite some time (>4 hours).
The CD from which I have installed the OS is perfectly fine and has not given me any problem till date. I have used the same CD for formatting my system earlier as well. So that discounts the possibility of corrupted windows as well.
Now that leaves two options (in my opinion):
- Corrupt hard drive
- other hardware components being faulty
I checked out my motherboard and all the components. Though I do not have any experience of checking them out, they looked fine to me. Cables were properly connected. I may have accidentally removed and in process destroyed one of the connectors for the SATA hard drive, but it has got backup connectors, so I believe that should not be a problem. IF wrong, please do tell me.
Now, after looking at one of the logs generated by event management, maybe hard drive is the culprit.

Run CrystalDiskInfo and it should tell you the status of your hard drive.

If there is a hint that the drive is going to fail, backup your file as soon as possible.

If I am going to use that, I would have to boot into the system, which I am not able to do so. Tried using the program by copying it into USB drive, but whenever I restarted the system, a message came up which said "DISK ERROR. PRESS ANY KEY TO RESTART THE SYSTEM."
Any other method to try the above solution??

Connect your HDD(h1) to another pc(hd2) and try to backup your data of h1 to h2. Good luck.
*HDD = h1 represents your hdd, h2 another pc HDD.
I don't need to know everything, I just need to know where to find it, when I need it.

The data is already backed up
.
It is the hard drive that I am more concerned about!!!

Good news
. Ok just my two cents did you check the connector cable ?? Try with a new one and change the port (eg you are connected with port 1 change it to port two.)

Thanks for your response, Indranil. I have already tried your suggestion. Now, I have given my system to a computer mechanic and as per him, he found two problems with it. One is hard drive issue and second is that a chip in motherboard is faulty (as per him, he is repairing it). Let us see what happens now.
By the way, (just going off topic) I try to log on to this forum while using my laptop and I am not successful in posting replies. I have Windows 7 ultimate edition (OEM), IE 9 installed on my system. My laptop is HP Probook.
