G Data security tips for the New Year
• The operating system and installed software (including the browser, email program and PDF reader) should always be kept up-to-date by installing service packs, patches and updates. Outdated programs for which there is no longer any provider service should be completely removed and replaced with a new version if necessary.
• Users should use a comprehensive security solution that includes a virus scanner as well as a firewall, spam and real-time protection. This solution should be kept up-to-date with program and virus signature updates.
• Browser cookies, the history and web form files should be deleted after each Internet session as they record data on surfing behaviour. Browsers can be configured to delete these automatically by choosing the appropriate settings. Some browsers also have a private mode, where the majority of temporary files are deleted at the end of the browser session.
• The browser's "remember passwords" function should be deactivated in general, as these can be abused by cyber criminals. Passwords already saved in the browser should be deleted. All websites with stored passwords can be viewed and deleted in the browser settings.
• A backup saves all critical data in case of an infection or system crash. Furthermore, a system image backs up the entire hard disk with all installed programs. Comprehensive security solutions often include an appropriate module.
• Users should ensure they surf with limited user rights. Rights and user accounts can be easily managed via the Control Panel. Anyone who reinstalls Windows can set up an ap-propriate profile during the installation process.
