FIRST thing to do is to change the default 'admin' password.

Then, there's an option called "Enable Firewall" - enable that. (It's done by default)

Also many routers have a setting like "Access Control Editing" (ex. in my router) such that only a specific IP can access and modify router settings .

If you don't use port forwarding, virtual server, Then it's safe to disable "SPI". I have disabled SPI & have no problems eventhough there's a warning " (WARNING: If You enabled SPI, all traffics initiated from WAN would be blocked, including DMZ, Virtual Server, and ACL WAN side.) "

Also, if you are in crowded area like cities & do not use the WLAN(Wi-Fi), disable that.

ABOVE ALL, install any good firewall in your PC. This is necessary.

Just change the default admin password to a more secure one. Make use of letters, numbers and special characters such as !@#$%. You should disable public access to the router and only internal networks can access the router.

Finally, make sure you have the latest router firmware.
