Besides a good security suite, (KIS is my favorite) my most useful tool is myself. My method is a combination of safe surfing and keeping the OS and all programs updated.

DefenseWall HIPS wins when your anti-virus fails. Isolate good from evil!

DefenseWall HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System) is the simplest and easiest way to protect yourself from malicious software (spyware, botnets, adware, keyloggers, rootkits, etc.) and identification theft, that can not be stopped by your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, when you surf the Internet! Using the next generation proactive protection technologies, sandboxing and virtualization, DefenseWall HIPS helps you achieve a maximum level of protection against malicious software, while not demanding any special knowledge or ongoing online signature updates. No signatures, no popup windows, no false positives. It is just reliable and transparent protection, easy to use and strong.

DefenseWall HIPS divides all applications into 'Trusted' and 'Untrusted' groups. Untrusted applications are launched with limited rights to modification of critical system parameters, and only in the virtual zone that is specially allocated for them, thus separating them from trusted applications. In the case of penetration by malicious software via one of the untrusted applications (web browsers etc), it cannot harm your system and may be closed with just one click! With DefenseWall HIPS, Internet surfing has never been so simple, safe and easy.

Sticky- Since you appear up on A-V software, I was wondering if you might know anything about the type of A-V the Department of Defense uses on their computers. It may just be a rumor but I read about it somewhere a while back. It was said in the article that the software is free, has semi-artificial-intelligence in that it can detect any new viruses and spyware before they even make it to the public databases. When new malware is detected it will write a defense code against it immediately then send information pertaining to the malware to a central database, in real time, that all computers using the software are connected to and continuously communicating with. Everything is done in micro-seconds and in real time. Like I said, it may just be a rumor but, if it is out there, and one could get their hands on a copy, one would never need any other Anti-Virus. I have tried several you have listed here and found them either too intrusive, overly-protective to the extreme, or lax in their protection. I used to swear by AVG, until I found Avast. I was satisfied with it until I stumbled across ESET NOD 32, which I am running now. I'm pretty well satisfied with it for the time being, however, I was going to give Bit Defender a try but was too late to get the free license. For the past few months, I have been trying so many A-V programs, I can't see paying for a license just to try it out. Just wanted to give you a holler since you worked so hard on your post. You did an excellent job.

Whatever the DoD uses will never be public knowledge. That would create a vulnerability and not be a wise move.

I would imagine though that they use the strongest encryption available and stuff like hardware firewalls etc. There are network security solutions that involve multiple layered security measures. Something that wouldn't be found on a home computer.

You might be thinking of this.

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- To add an extra layer of defense against unauthorized intrusion, DoD Web sites offer free anti-virus software intended for use on members’ home computers.
