Tonite I was going thru different sites reading various news articles etc. All of a sudden I got a pop-up window & my pc got locked.
This is the site - BUT DON'T GO TO IT!!
Antivirus 2008 - http://scan.free-antispyware-scanner.com/110049/3
I tried to close the window & go back to my other opened tabs, but I was locked. I went to Task Manager & ended iexplorer.
As I was writing this I decided to open another window & went back to the site. It started to scan what looked like my c-drive. I was asked if I wanted to install the antivirus software or if I wanted to wait till the scanning results appeared, I shld click "Cancel". Then it continued scanning & showed me a "high alert" of 3 viruses, "Remove" or "Ignore". When I tried to close the window, it tried to install the Antivirus 2008 software. Back to Task Manager & I ended iexplorer again
I don't think anything got installed but I'm presently scanning my hd anyway.
I'm not an amateur pc user & I don't install softwares that take control of my pc without my consent. In addition, I recently read up on "XP Antivirus 2008" being one of the latest counterfeit antispywares so after a moment, I realized where I was.
Going back to my "subject", can't this site be stopped? Or reported?

The alert that it shows is fake & if it asks to allow it to scan - you should neither click OK nor Cancel. just close ie.

Can be stopped but he'll re-open another site.

To prevent these from happening again - or visiting such site, just edit/replace your 'hosts' file with bad sites list that you can get from Spybot SD or http://www.hosts-file.net/?s=Download. All sites will be silently blocked. Also do use the add-on Adblock Plus in FF3 (this will remove such banners/ads).Or use something like Site Advisor.
check if that malware site is already on stopbadware.org list. If not, you can report it there in "Get Involved" section. Or you can report such sites at http://forum.hosts-file.net/ - it will be added to their hosts file list which many users use to block sites. Thus, you can help other novice users from being victims to such sites.

Yah even if u killed that site sooner it will pop up again as a new rogue site - Targeting the IE flaws and vulnerabilities, some even have to drop trojan agents and vundos to hostage ur pc then ask u ( Scareware Tactics ) to download a fake antivirus that u need to pay in order to clean those nasties?
Antivirusdoc.net
Systemantiviruspro.com
Websurfsecure.com

Here are some additional software you may wish to consider using, to prevent malicious software installing in your PC.
IE-SPYADS IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of known ad/spy servers and domains to the "Restricted Zone" of Internet Explorer.

SpywareBlaster From the same company as Spyware guard, this is not a scanner, it blocks malicious objects and code from being downloaded, in addition to blocking access to sites known to download malware. Freeware

Even though I'm late to the discussion I also recommend NoScript for Firefox 2 and 3. It's a great add-on that automatically disables JavaScript from running on websites. The downside to it is you have to manually allow a website by clicking the add-on icon and hitting allow, although you only have to do it once. It prevents JavaScript exploits that are a common problem on the web today.
It's a great tool but it's not for everyone. Most people would be quickly tired of it but I like the peace of mind when I visit websites for the first time or ones I don't trust. I've been using it for a while and recommend it to anyone who's willing to listen.

JavaScript can be disabled in FF Options also.
And some websites disable right clicking, selection, or copying. Disabling JavaScript will set it right. :)
