mkv to avi conversion
I have downloaded a movie that is 2.75gb.It is in mkv format and my video player does not read it.I tried to convert it to avi using format factory.Because the file is very heavy it is taking more than 4 hours and I could not complete it.
Is there any faster method to do the job without sacrificing the quality? The movie is "basic instinct" blue ray quality.
Thanks

Try VLC to watch your movie. VLC is the player which can watch the most number of format of video/movie/audio.

Try the latest Media Player Classic, it can play any type of file!!!
Get it from http://www.codecguide.com and look for Klite mega codec pack

I don't think you can find any software that will encode your movie any faster, encoding is heavy on cpu and can take forever on slower systems, what i do when i have to encode a movie ,i just let it run overnight.Of course another option if you don't want to spend the time encoding is to install the VLC player like other members have recommended ,it can play just about any file format.

mkv to avi conversion
I think I did not properly communicate my problem.I have all the players mentioned, installed and there is no difficulty in playing the video on my computer. What I want is to burn the video on a dvd and watch it on the TV screen.
My stand alone dvd player does not read mkv files.I was wondering whether I can quickly convert the file to avi with tools like MKVExtract, avidemux, mkvtoolnix etc with help from here.

Why not convert it when you sleep?
So when you get up time, is done already...
