Wink Boost And Increase Wireless Adapter Signal Strength And Speed

If you happened to own an intel PRO Wireless or any other branded wireless receiver, you have the ability to enhance your wireless signal receiving range:

1.Right click on ‘My Computer’ –> Go to ‘Properties’ –> Select the ‘hardware’ tab –> Click on the ‘Device Manager’ button –> Under the ‘Network Adapters’ list, select your network card.

2.Under the ‘Advanced’ tab, select ‘Roaming Aggressiveness’, uncheck the ‘Use default value’ and set the value to ‘highest’. Roaming Aggressiveness – This setting allows you to define how aggressively your wireless client roams to improve connection to an access point.

3.Under the ‘Advanced’ tab, select ‘Throughput Enhancement’, uncheck the ‘Use default value’ and set the value to ‘enable’. Throughput Enhancement – Enhance the transmit throughput by enabling packet bursting.
When you’re done, hit ‘ok’ and save the settings.

Based on my experience, modifying these values is not possible with a cheaper brand-less wireless adapter.

My 'roaming aggressiveness' is set to 3.Medium. It seems tempting to try this out and increase it to the highest level but I decided to do some Googling first. Here's what I found

If the roaming aggressiveness is set to balanced or high, the system will tend to drop weak connections—even if there are no stronger connections. He needs to go into the adapter configuration screen, which you can find in the network control panel. Change the setting from the default value to the lowest value. But once he relocates to an area with multiple access points, he'll want to reset this to the default.

Seems like a bad idea to do so now...coz I am relying on weak connections.

Can somebody tell me whether I should go ahead and try this?

It might be a good idea not to. I know for a fact my wireless doesn't even support any of this.

It's worth a try, the worst that will happen is it won't work and you can bump it back.

Mine supports & is set to default.

This setting allows you to define how aggressively your wireless client roams to improve connection to an access point.
Default: Balanced setting between not roaming and performance.
Lowest: Your wireless client will not roam. Only significant link quality degradation causes it to roam to another access point.
Highest: Your wireless client continuously tracks the link quality. If any degradation occurs, it tries to find and roam to a better access point.

I have been doing these for years and this improves the connection speed. Sometimes this will cause problem. but will work fine, nonetheless.
